Jack Sinkler was baptised in St. Mary’s Church, Pateley Bridge.
The Parish Register lists Jack as “the spurious son of Jane Hebden”, meaning he was illegitimate. Jack’s parents, John Sinkler and Jane Hebden, were not married to each other when he was born. In fact, his father was married to another local woman called Jane Findley, who was nine years his senior.
Despite being a married man, all John Sinkler’s children were born to his lover, Jane Hebden. After his first wife died, John was finally free to marry Jane Hebden in 1828.
