Jack and Elisha Sinkler were caught “ranging with dogs and guns” on Dallowgill moor near Pateley Bridge by John Booth, assistant gamekeeper for wealthy landowner Mrs Lawrence of Studley Park.
A quarrel broke out between the Sinklers, Booth, and another man named Metcalfe, which ended with the assistant gamekeeper claiming the Sinkler brothers had assaulted him. A warrant for their arrest was issued a few days later, sparking Jack and Elisha Sinkler’s serious troubles with the law, which would eventually see both of them transported to Australia.
